From Undrafted to Unforgettable

One of the most remarkable stories in NFL history belongs to a man from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, who went from a Division II football star with no invitation to the NFL Combine to one of the best receivers in the league for years.

Adam Thielen went to Detroit Lakes High School in Minnesota, where he was a multi-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and golf. After graduating, he continued his football career at Minnesota State, earning a scholarship worth just $500. He finished his four-year career with the Mavericks with 198 receptions, 2,802 yards, and 20 touchdowns, but was left off every NFL team’s scouting radar.

He wasn’t done yet, though. Thielen paid $500 to attend a regional combine at the Chicago Bears facility, where he ran a 4.45 40-yard dash and finally got on the radar of NFL teams. Despite that performance, he went undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft but later signed with his childhood team, the Minnesota Vikings, as an undrafted free agent after earning a tryout.

Thielen would go on to spend 11 seasons in Minnesota, starting on the practice squad in 2013 before making the 53-man roster in 2014 as a special teams contributor. From there, he worked his way into a starting role in 2016 and never looked back, becoming one of the most prominent receivers in franchise history.

The Dream Every Minnesota Kid Chases

Adam Thielen’s fandom for the Minnesota Vikings goes all the way back to the Randy Moss and Cris Carter days, as he stood in line at training camp waiting to get Moss’ autograph. Thielen’s football career is the embodiment of every Minnesota kid’s dream. Against all odds, he made the NFL and conquered it.

Now, the story is great and all, but some younger fans may read this without knowing the true impact Thielen had on the Minnesota Vikings beyond just being a Minnesota native.

Just a Minnesota Kid with Opportunity — and Belief in Himself

Thielen played 10 seasons with the Vikings, earning his roster spot rep by rep. In 2016, during his third season on the roster, he carved out a role beyond special teams. Thielen started 10 games at receiver and racked up 69 catches for 967 yards and five touchdowns. That season included a fan-favorite performance against the Vikings’ most hated rival, the Green Bay Packers, where Thielen caught 12 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns at Lambeau Field.

That 2016 season put Thielen on the map, but many still didn’t fully recognize the name — that changed in 2017. The Vikings went 13–3 on a magical run led by Case Keenum and a feared Mike Zimmer defense, but one of the main attractions was Thielen’s breakout. He finished the year with 91 catches for 1,276 yards and 4 touchdowns, establishing himself as the team’s top offensive threat and delivering one of the most memorable seasons in franchise history.

The momentum carried into 2018, when the Vikings signed Kirk Cousins, and Thielen did wonders with him. Thielen put up 112 receptions, 1,373 yards, and 9 touchdowns. The most impressive part of that season came early, as he opened the year with eight straight 100-yard performances — still the most to start a season in NFL history.

Unfortunately, the production dipped after that. Thielen did not reach 1,000 yards again in Minnesota after 2018 due to injuries from 2019–21, but he still found the end zone at a high level, including 14 touchdowns in 2020. Even more importantly, Thielen brought mentorship to the locker room. He took Justin Jefferson under his wing from the moment he arrived in 2020 and helped him develop into one of the league’s best receivers today.

The Fairytale in Purple Comes to an End

Thielen departed after the 2022 season and joined the Carolina Panthers for two years, where he returned to the 1,000-yard mark in 2023 as a true No. 1 option again. For Vikings fans, it was awesome to see someone who had been doubted his entire life prove the doubters wrong once again at 33 years old.

Thielen later returned to Minnesota in 2025 for a short 11-game stint that didn’t go as planned for either side. He requested his release to pursue more playing time and finished his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, earning a bigger role and even making the playoffs. Thielen played his final game on January 12, 2026, before officially hanging up the cleats.

More Than a Receiver A Minnesota Icon

The Minnesota kid finished his Vikings career with 542 receptions (4th in franchise history), 6,751 receiving yards (5th), and 55 receiving touchdowns (3rd). He also earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2017 and made two Pro Bowl appearances from 2017–18.

Across his entire NFL career, Thielen totaled 704 receptions, 8,497 receiving yards, and 64 receiving touchdowns.

It would be irresponsible to talk about the impact of Adam Thielen’s playing career in Minnesota without mentioning who he was as a leader and person in the community off the field. Thielen was a two-year captain of the Minnesota Vikings from 2021–2022 and was also named the Vikings’ Man of the Year in 2022. Adam Thielen and his family also started the “Thielen Foundation” while in Minnesota to raise money for youth development and programs that help kids achieve their goals. The foundation has raised over $4.6 million since 2018.

Now, on March 19, 2026, Adam Thielen officially retires as a Minnesota Viking on a one-day contract. It’s bittersweet to see a fan favorite retire, but more than anything, it’s a chance to recognize a player who embodied every Minnesota kid’s dream — and left his mark.
