Aaron Glenn's Time Is Almost Up: Reaction to Week 7’s Loss

The New York Jets just lost to the winless Miami Dolphins and have officially fallen to 2-5 on the season. With this loss, head coach Aaron Glenn’s abysmal record against divisional opponents is now 0-8. Unfortunately for Glenn, his tenure as Jets head coach may be nearing its end, especially after this dreadful loss.
Quick Recap of the Game
Defense
What was thought to be the Jets’ strength turned out to be their biggest weakness versus the Dolphins. It took the Jets’ defense just four minutes and seven seconds to allow one of the league's worst offenses to march down the field and score a touchdown. The defense was uninspiring all around, and there were moments when they seemed to have a hard time containing Dolphins QB Malik Willis, who rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown. On top of that, PFF indicated that the defense struggled in coverage, giving them a season-low overall coverage grade of 44.1. The defense allowed a total of 156 rushing yards and 204 passing yards. While those numbers may seem low, I expected much better against the Dolphins’ struggling offense. Needless to say, the defense should’ve performed much better against an offense ranked in the bottom three by PFF.
Offense
The offense had a solid game all around, but some familiar issues resurfaced, including the failure to fully capitalize on scoring opportunities. While the Jets scored a season-high 25 points, they had opportunities to put even more points on the board. On the Jets’ first drive of the third quarter, kicker Jason Sanders missed a 40-yard field goal that could have changed the outcome of the game, as the Jets ultimately lost by a field goal. Additionally, the Jets had an opportunity to take the lead after the defense forced a three-and-out early in the final quarter. However, the offense went three-and-out themself. Another instance of the Jets failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities came when Geno Smith threw an interception after the offense had marched down to the Dolphins’ 21-yard line. This interception cost the offense a great opportunity to put points on the board. Even worse, late in the game, the Jets were forced to settle for a field goal after losing yardage on three straight plays from Miami’s 1-yard line. Ultimately, failing to take advantage of these opportunities has been a common theme for the offense.

Despite some of the offense’s issues, there were still promising performances from young players. For the third consecutive week, backup running back Braelon Allen had a stellar performance. Allen ran for a total of 104 yards on 17 carries (6.1 YPC) and caught a career-high six passes, which he turned into 30 yards. Another player who had an exceptional performance was rookie Omar Cooper Jr., who was also coming off a great game. Cooper finished the game with 115 yards and a touchdown while catching all five passes that came his way. He also had a crowd-erupting 52-yard catch-and-run on the Jets’ first offensive play of the game. While it’s still early in his three-game career, the Jets could have a future star on their hands. One more player who shined was sophomore tight end Mason Taylor. Against the Dolphins, Taylor caught five passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns, one of which displayed his strong hands. All three of these offensive standouts are only 22 years old, so performances like these leave a lot of hope for the future of the offense.
Already Focusing on Next Year?
Even though the season isn't even halfway over, a lot of us Jets fans are already focusing on next season. The next 10 games feel as if they’re pointless, as, barring a miracle, the Jets will likely extend their playoff drought to 16 straight seasons, the longest active drought in American sports. Unfortunately for Jets legend and current head coach Aaron Glenn, his tenure could be coming to an end soon—and rightfully so. Glenn’s overall record as Jets head coach is 5–19, including an 0–8 record in divisional games. Many have criticized his time management and end-of-half situations as well, and to make matters worse, SNY came out with the following stat: "The Jets have been outscored 107-6 in the final 2:00 of first halves.” This stat is just another reason why Glenn shouldn't be coaching the Jets next year. Furthermore, this season, Glenn received another chance to choose his offensive and defensive coordinators after firing last year's coordinators, yet the team is still losing. There are simply no more excuses for Aaron Glenn, and I believe they need to part ways at the end of the season.
Although Aaron Glenn’s terrible tenure may not end soon, here are some names of potential replacements to keep an eye on.

Final Thoughts
After the Jets’ loss to the winless Dolphins, it feels as if the season is once again over before Halloween. This Sunday, the Jets will face the Las Vegas Raiders, who are on a four-game losing streak. If the Jets lose this game, it will completely drain the life out of the fanbase, if it hasn’t been drained already. If there was ever going to be a time for Aaron Glenn to turn things around, it’s now.
