Does a Cousins-Vikings reunion make sense in 2026?

Kirk Cousins spent 6 mercurial years as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. Coming over from Washington following Case Keenum and the Vikings’ 2017 NFC Championship run, Cousins instantly became very possibly the most polarizing player in Minnesota sports history. Cousins led the Vikings to a 50-37-1 record, 2 playoff appearances and 1 playoff victory during his tenure. He was named to the Pro Bowl 3 times. Cousins played his final game for the Vikings in a Week 8 victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, a game in which Cousins tore his achilles, ending his season. The Vikings played out the season behind Joshua Dobbs, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall before letting Cousins walk to Atlanta in free agency. Minnesota then selected JJ McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Now, 2 seasons later, Cousins will yet again be looking to sign elsewhere and a return to Minnesota seems logical for the former Michigan State field general.
Cousins was expected to be the only quarterback of note for the Falcons when he joined the team in March, 2024. Then just over a month later, Atlanta made a gamble, drafting Michael Penix Jr out of Washington 8th overall. Cousins started 15 games for the Falcons in 2024, eventually being benched for the rookie southpaw. Cousins entered the 2025 season as QB2 in a mentor role, something he had never done before. Cousins took over as the starter in week 12, looking to put together tape that would make him a valuable addition in free agency. Cousins threw for 1471 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions as QB1. Now, after a regime change, Cousins will be released by the Falcons on the first day of the league year and will be eligible to sign with any team.
Minnesota seems like a logical landing spot for Cousins, but should either side be interested? Kirk is obviously quite familiar with many of the Vikings offensive weapons and the current coaching staff. He also showed promise in his final 4 games of 2025 with 7 touchdowns to only 2 interceptions, winning all 4 matchups. But, even prime Kirk Cousins was not necessarily a needle-mover for Minnesota. Cousins would have to understand his role as a veteran who is rostered to push JJ McCarthy and be ready to take the reins if McCarthy continues to get injured or does not play up to snuff.
There will be interest from both sides to a point, but both groups have plenty of options if the shoe does not fit. Cousins could follow his former Vikings offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to the Raiders to join a QB room with eventual first-overall pick Fernando Mendoza, he could head to New York to be the Jets fill-in leader as they await the loaded 2027 quarterback class, or he could hang up the cleats and start his broadcasting career. The Vikings will likely kick the tires on Mac Jones, Kyler Murray, and other mid tier guys. They could even make a play for Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, or Baker Mayfield. Minnesota may just as well bring back Carson Wentz and go all in on McCarthy. Whatever happens, it seems clear that there will be at least conversations between the Vikings and the man they once gave the largest fully guaranteed contract in NFL history.
