The Indianapolis Colts officially closed an integral chapter this offseason following the release of veteran cornerback Kenny Moore after both sides mutually agreed to seek a trade back in April. The move was not shocking given the information from the pre-draft process. But it still left a noticeable sense of uncertainty surrounding the future of the nickel/slot position. For years, Moore was not only one of the most influential leaders of Indianapolis’ defense, but also one of the NFL’s more reliable slot defenders, even with his shorter height and overall build. Carrying on that level of production and leadership will not be easy.

Still, there may already be a clear answer waiting on the roster.

Second-year cornerback Justin Walley could very well become the next player tasked with carrying the torch at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Throughout the pre-draft process this year, there was plenty of circulation around what could be done with Kenny Moore and a replacement. One player I personally pushed for was now-New York Jets cornerback D’Angelo Ponds. Ponds’ compact build and aggressive play style mirrored much of what made Kenny Moore successful during his career in Indianapolis. At the time, it felt like a natural fit for the Colts if they wanted to continue building around a smaller, instinctive nickel defender.

Of course, that ultimately never materialized.

However, there was another name I briefly mentioned that was on the roster all along, Justin Walley.

At first, the selection of Walley in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft was met with mixed reactions. Many fans questioned whether the Colts had reached for the former Minnesota defensive back, especially considering some of the bigger names still available on the board. Yet as training camp unfolded, skepticism quickly turned into excitement.

Walley was undeniably one of the most impressive young defenders on the field before suffering a torn ACL late in camp. Coaches consistently praised his instincts, competitiveness, and ability to remain attached to receivers in coverage. Even veteran players began speaking highly of his maturity and natural feel for the position despite being only a rookie.

For a brief stretch, it genuinely looked as though the Colts had uncovered another hidden gem in the secondary.

Unfortunately, the injury quickly ended what appeared to be a rapidly ascending rookie campaign before it ever truly began.

Now entering his second season, Walley finds himself with a major opportunity directly in front of him.

The former Minnesota standout possesses many of the traits that made Kenny Moore successful over the years, while also bringing some additional versatility to Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s scheme. Standing at 5-foot-10, Walley is slightly taller than Moore, who was listed at 5-foot-9 throughout most of his NFL career. While one inch may not sound significant, that added length could become important in Anarumo’s defense, particularly against bigger slot receivers and tight ends.

More importantly, Walley simply plays bigger than his size. Which is a trait often times yearned for amongst countless NFL franchises.

During his collegiate career at Minnesota, Walley consistently showcased the type of aggressive and physical mentality defensive coordinators strongly desire in nickel corners. Across four seasons with the Golden Gophers, he accumulated 155 tackles, seven interceptions, 27 pass breakups, four fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles, one sack, and two defensive touchdowns. His production reflected much more than just solid coverage ability. Walley constantly found ways to impact games with game swaying plays.

Whether it was punching the football loose, undercutting passing lanes, or flying downhill against the run, Walley developed a reputation as one of the more consistently instinctive defensive backs in the Big Ten.

That natural style of play translated well during training camp last offseason.

What stood out most, however, was his confidence. Despite entering the league as a third-round rookie, Walley never appeared overwhelmed by the speed of NFL competition. Nor did he let the presence of Kenny Moore at the same position rattle him in any way. Reports out of the Colts camp consistently described him as sticky in coverage and relentless at the point of catch. Those traits are critical for any nickel defender, especially within Anarumo’s ‘mad scientist’ defensive philosophy.

The Colts are clearly looking to reshape the identity of their defense moving forward. With Anarumo now leading the unit for a second year, versatility and physicality in the secondary will continue to become even more important. Especially with more pieces from the Bengals teams Anarumo coached being brought in as yet another piece of insurance.

That is precisely why Walley feels like such a natural fit.

Kenny Moore faced size-related questions throughout his entire career, yet he continuously proved doubters wrong because of his instincts, effort, and toughness. Walley appears cut from a very similar cloth. He may not possess elite size or overwhelming athletic traits, but his intelligence and competitive nature allow him to consistently position himself around the football. And not as just another average player, but a lockdown corner instead.

There is also something to be said about how quickly Walley earned trust within the organization before his injury. Rookies rarely receive consistent praise from coaching staffs during camp unless they are truly standing out. In Walley’s case, the positive buzz surrounding his development became impossible to ignore before the ACL tear abruptly changed the conversation. Even a year later, general manager Chris Ballard continued to praise Walley as someone who would have played a large role if not for the aforementioned injury.

Ironically, durability was considered one of Walley’s strengths coming out of college. During his time at Minnesota, he built a reputation for reliability and toughness while consistently battling through the physicality of Big Ten football. That made the injury even more unfortunate considering how healthy he had remained throughout his collegiate career.

Assuming Walley returns fully healthy entering camp, there is every reason to believe he can immediately compete for significant playing time.

Of course, the starting nickel role will not be handed to him.

Competition will undoubtedly exist throughout training camp and the preseason. The Colts have several young defensive backs fighting for more opportunities within a crowded secondary room. Veteran presence and scheme familiarity will also factor into the coaching staff’s decision-making process.

But if Walley resumes the level of play he displayed before the injury, it may become difficult to keep him off the field.

His ability to mirror receivers, support against the run, and create turnovers fits exactly what Indianapolis needs following Moore’s departure. More importantly, he offers long-term upside at a position the Colts suddenly need stability in, reinforcing the ‘younger and faster’ label Ballard bestowed upon the defense.

Replacing a franchise staple like Kenny Moore was never going to be simple or easy. Players like Moore do not come around often, especially considering everything he accomplished after entering the league as an undrafted free agent. His leadership, toughness, and consistency helped define Indianapolis’ defense for years.

But every era eventually comes to an end.

Now, the Colts appear ready to begin the next chapter at the nickel position, and Justin Walley may very well be the player entrusted with continuing that legacy.

If his recovery stays on track and his impressive developmental curve continues, there is a very real possibility Walley runs away with the starting role before Week 1 even arrives.

And if that happens, the Colts may discover they already had Kenny Moore’s successor on the roster all along.
