The San Antonio Spurs are moving on to the Western Conference Semifinals, closing out the Portland Trail Blazers in five games. The Spurs continue their quest for their first championship in 12 years.

Spurs Player Analysis

The Spurs are another team in this year's playoffs with amazing depth. All of San Antonio’s starters have unique skill sets on the offensive end, which makes them a nightmare to match up against. Victor Wembanyama had an MVP-level season where he averaged 25 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Along with his superstar offensive statistics, Wembanyama was named Defensive Player of the Year, making history as the first unanimous winner of the award.

Victor Wembanyama may be the focal point of the San Antonio Spurs offense, but Stephon Castle also deserves a lot of recognition for his contributions. Castle averaged 16.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game this season—highlighted by a 40-point triple-double earlier in the season. Castle has become a vital component for San Antonio in just his second NBA season. More significantly, Castle's skill set and playmaking instincts make him a perfect long-term backcourt combination with Wembanyama, providing San Antonio with a strong foundation going forward.

The San Antonio Spurs have also benefited from strong perimeter production, with Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie providing valuable spacing and consistent three-point shooting. Much of their success has come as defenses collapse on Victor Wembanyama, creating open looks on the perimeter that both players have consistently capitalized on.

Beyond the starting unit, San Antonio’s bench has been a major strength, maintaining stability and production even in stretches without Castle, Fox, and Wembanyama on the floor. Keldon Johnson, the league’s Sixth Man of the Year, has anchored the second unit, while rookie Dylan Harper has made an immediate impact off the bench. His 27-point performance in Game 3 proved pivotal in securing a key playoff victory.

San Antonio’s Championship Path

If the Minnesota Timberwolves are able to close out the Denver Nuggets, the San Antonio Spurs will enter the Western Conference Semifinals with a legitimate path to the NBA Finals. A potential second-round matchup against Minnesota would tilt in San Antonio’s favor. The Timberwolves would be without key contributors such as Donte DiVincenzo and Anthony Edwards, significantly weakening their offensive firepower and overall ceiling.

Barring any injuries or upsets, it is likely that the Spurs would match up versus the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. All NBA fans are asking the same question: Can anybody beat OKC in a 7-game series? I firmly believe the Spurs have the best chance.

The San Antonio Spurs matched up against the Oklahoma City Thunder five times this season, winning four of those contests. The most telling takeaway from that stretch is that San Antonio’s success was driven by balance rather than individual dominance.

In matchup 1, Wembanyama, Fox, and Castle all had 22 points, with Devin Vassell leading the Spurs scoring with 23. In matchup 2, Castle had 24 points, Harrison Barnes had 20, and Keldon Johnson had 25 off the bench. In matchup 3, Fox led the scoring with 29 points, along with Wembanyama and Castle each scoring 19. All of those games were Spurs victories.

If the Spurs draw the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, I like their chances.
