After an offseason where many predicted the Boston Celtics would be a play-in team at best, Boston has shattered expectations and currently sits 2nd in the East.
With the trade deadline approaching, there was growing speculation about whether the Celtics would make a move involving Anfernee Simons and his expiring contract. They did just that. Dealing Simons to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for veteran center Nikola Vučević and a swap of second round picks.
Simons had been productive in Boston. His scoring punch and willingness to compete defensively made him a key contributor. However, with Jayson Tatum’s return looming, Simons became more expendable and easier to replace within the rotation.
Financially, the move was just as important. The trade pushed Boston under the first apron and to roughly $6 million below the luxury tax. That flexibility opens the door for the Celtics to:
Sign a buyout player whose previous salary exceeded $14.1 million.
Utilize a newly created $27 million trade exception
Early Impact of Vučević
Through his first three games in Boston, Vučević has already showcased the skill set the Celtics targeted :
13.7
9 rebounds
1 block + 1 steal per game
He brings elite rebounding, and with Neeemis Queta, Boston can keep a high-level rebounded on the floor at all times.
Offensively, Vučević adds rare versatility for a post big:
Floor Spacing (including 4-5 from three vs. his former team.
High level passing, highlighted by a few great passes to a cutting Jordan Walsh, and one to Derrick White in the corner to seal the win in his debut.
Advanced screen IQ, knowing when to roll hard versus popping out for open threes.
Big Picture
If Boston were sitting in the 7th seed and Tatum’s return timeline was uncertain, this trade likely never happens.
But given the team’s success and Tatum’s impending return, the deal signals something bigger: the Celtics are positioning themselves not just as contenders—but as favorites in the East.
With improved financial flexibility, added frontcourt skill, and their superstar on the way back, Boston now has a legitimate path toward Banner 19.
